Are you a teacher who wants to share more of your talents with the local community and children? Do you have a special subject that you are passionate about and want to teach others? Do you love children: teaching them, inspiring them, entertaining them?

WHIDBEY ISLAND LANGUAGE, ART & STEM CENTER (WILASC) is looking for people like you to join our team of teachers for seasonal camps, short courses, workshops, and afterschool enrichment classes during the school year. We strive to offer classes for a variety of age groups from 4-18 as well as for adults. Many of these classes have either never been taught locally before, or else discontinued by other providers due to Covid and other factors.  This is an excellent opportunity for you to make a positive impact on the learning journey of Whidbey’s student community!

DETAILS:

WE ARE LOOKING FOR BOTH SUMMER CAMP TEACHERS AND AFTER-SCHOOL TEACHERS IN:

- Languages  (Spanish, Chinese, French, etc.)
- STEM (robotics, coding, marine science, space science, LEGO STEM, herbal science, farming, marine science, and other outdoor STEM-based education)

- ART: art, photography, film-making, writing, music, performing art, etc.)

  1. RESPONSIBILITIES:

TIME COMMITMENT:  These are independent contractor positions on a part-time/freelance basis. You propose your hours, subjects, students’ age group, and location you want to teach (choose between South, Central and North Whidbey). Your teaching schedule may need to synchronize with our classroom availability, but other than that you are welcome to pick the hours that work best around your other jobs and commitments.

CURRICULUM: We invite you to propose your curriculum for the courses you teach. We can also offer support and resources if you need help with curriculum building.

REQUIREMENTS:

Our team of teachers is diverse in age, background, and area of expertise – we value the experiences you can bring to the table. In general, these are the qualities we are looking for:

  • Expertise in your subject: languages, art or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) subjects, acquired through training and/or teaching. Previous teaching/mentoring experience is highly desirable.

  • Experience in classroom management is essential (or else, you must be open and willing to learn to hone this skill set). We would love to work with teachers who are comfortable with and enjoy the fun, creativity, and challenges of working with a diverse group of students, including teaching, motivating, entertaining, and managing them while creating a positive and nurturing learning environment for the group.

  • Possess a growth mindset and be open to learning and growing with the team to constantly improve our offerings.

  • Be responsible, reliable, and professional. Exercise sound judgment and appropriate conduct when interacting with students, parents/caregivers, and other stakeholders.

  • Background check is required for all teachers

3. COMPENSATION:

  • We offer competitive hourly rates for longer assignments (e.g. afterschool classes, which go throughout the oschool year). We are also open to proposals for compensation packages for short-term assignments (camps, short courses, workshops). In some cases, we might offer travel allowance.

  • Teachers are responsible for their own income tax and professional liability insurance (we can support with setting up insurance for your service).

4. OTHER PERKS

  • Marketing and administrative support so that you only need to focus on what you love to do best: teaching.

  • Your kids enjoy your class for free

  • Staff discount:  25% OFF for one WILASC class during the time you teach at WILASC

  • Free training and professional development

  • Bring your child to work: so long as you can manage your child without affecting the quality of your class.  Our classroom in the South Whidbey Community Center has a private office that’s often empty. It is also located in the same hallway with the (temporary) Langley Library and SWCC’s Recreation Room - where children of certain age can often hang out and entertain themselves (subject to your judgment - WILASC is NOT responsible for your childcare).

  • Being part of an awesome, inspring team of teachers and educators who are making a difference to Whidbey’s community!

Please send your resume or questions to: hello@wilasc.com with the subject: APPLYING FOR TEACHING POSITION. Thank you!
