In this mixed-level Spanish class, students will acquire language skills through storytelling, songs, games, hands-on projects, and other immersive experiences.  Lessons are topic-based and our instructor, a Mexican native and experienced Spanish teacher, will focus on improving students' communication skills as well as expanding their vocabulary and enhancing pronunciation.

Our lessons typically include:

  • CIRCLE TIME: Students sing songs, recite verse, play games, and do calendar and lesson activities—all in Spanish. Students review activities from previous lessons and are introduced to new content.
  • STORY TIME: The teacher reads a Spanish children’s storybook to students. This provides students with an authentic Spanish language experience, introduces new content, and engages students’ imaginations.
  • ART TIME: Students complete an art project which is related to the theme for the lesson. While students are engaged, the teacher converses with them in Spanish, one-on-one, about what they are working on. This reinforces the communication objective for the lesson.
  • STUDENT PORTFOLIO ACTIVITY: Students practice language outcomes independently. The portfolio activity can be done in class with the teacher facilitating, or it can be assigned for homework.

CURRICULUM: We use the curriculum from Sonrias Spanish, a preschool Spanish curriculum provider with 27 years of experience teaching elementary Spanish. Sonrias developed the trademarked Acquire, Develop, Learn® methodology which provides students with a developmentally appropriate, standards-based, comprehensive Spanish language education. The Acquire, Develop, Learn® methodology includes scaffolded lesson activities to ensure a developmentally appropriate sequence of elementary Spanish instruction.

At level 1 (K-3), the Sonrias Spanish curriculum focuses on music and verses, games, roleplay and drama,  calendar activities, reading authentic literature,  art projects, and cultural activities.
