In this process-based art class, we will introduce a creative play space where the little artists explore a wide range of materials that stimulate their sensory curiosity (beads, play dough, textured paper, beans, paint, down/feathers, clay, nature objects,  textured toys, fabrics, yarn etc.). This type of creative exploration serves a young child’s language development, motor skills, focus, socio-emotional learning, and connection. Throughout the camp, we will also share stories that bring our senses alive, and cultivate an environment that is filled with life and presence.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR

Liz Olson is excited to join the team with a 24-year background in teaching art to students of all ages. A native of the San Francisco Bay area, Liz moved to the Pacific Northwest to attend college first in Canada and then at Central Washington University.  She earned her BA in history, with endorsements to teach K-12 art and 4-12 History, as well as a museum studies minor. She began with teaching middle and high school art and photography, then moved into teaching pre-school and elementary-age students as she started a family. She has taught in a variety of venues: public, private, homeschool co-ops, and classical schools.  She has led the art docent program at her local public school.  Liz has also taught ukulele, writing, and Latin.

Liz views art education as a way of building students’ self esteem. Art encourages risk taking, vulnerability, resilience, and creativity.  Students blossom when offered a variety of art mediums, discovering that everyone has an artist inside them.  Liz especially enjoys working with neurodiverse students.  As a parent to five kids, she recognizes that everyone’s brain is unique, and Art has the power to reach everyone.  She is a lifelong learner, and hopes to inspire all kids with fun and fulfilling lessons.
